xxxvii=579 pages with frontispiece, maps, plates and index. Octavo (8 8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. Edited by James T Boulton. Reprint, first published in the same year. Volume I of the Letters gives the first 580 letters in the series. This the time of Lawrence's youth in Eastwood and as a teacher in Croydon, his first year out of England - in Italy with Frieda- to the publication of Sons and Lovers. There are letters to his early loves, especially Jessie Chambers, Louie Burrows and Helen Corke. He writes The White Peacock, The Trespasser, Sons and Lovers, the early stories and poems. Condition: A very good to fine copy in like jacket.
