Nice condition copy of "The Chefs-D'Oeuvre D'Art of the PARIS UNIVERSAL EXHIBITION, 1878" edited by Edward Strahan. Circa 1878 (there is no date of publication stated); George Barrie; Philadelphia. The book is beautifully illustrated throughout with dozens of full-page plates, engravings on wood, head-pieces and tail-pieces (with an Index of each at the back). At the beginning of the book is a "Buildings of the Exposition" section with illustrations. Three-quarter leather bound with gilt front cover and spine, marbled end papers, and gilt page edges on all sides. The "Exposition Universelle" was held in Paris May 1st through November 10th to celebrate the recovery of France after the Franco-Prussian war. It was attended by 13 million people and featured exhibitions of fine art and new machinery. Among the many inventions on display were Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, and a megaphone and phonograph by Thomas Edison. Large, over-sized volume that measures 17" tall x 12" wide x 1 3/4" thick.
Condition:
Clean covers with no stains; some rubbing of the leather along the left and right edges of the spine, heavier rubbing at the corners. Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. Bright gilt on all 3 sides of the text block. The text pages are in excellent condition - clean and white with no issues found; the top of the "Overture" page has 4 words written lightly in pencil that appear to be in French...no other writing found. Overall the book is in very good condition.
