Volume I with 118 black and white images, includes essays by Ron Kurtz and Hank O'Neal. Volume II with 151 black and white images. 4to (cm 32x30,5). pp. 264 - 316. Perfetto (Mint). Prima edizione (First Edition). The new two-volume edition of Abbott presents a lot of photos scanned and digitally rendered by the publisher Gerhard Steidl at the request of Ron Kurtz, an American industrialist and photography collector who bought Abbott's archive from her in 1985. The volumes are divided by subject: the first contains her portraits, including the Paris portraits (1920); her pictures made on journeys across the country, between 1935 and 1983; and her scientific pictures, many of which were made at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the late 1950s and early 1960s. These are technical illustrations of different scientific phenomena. They are reminiscent of Man Ray's "rayograms", photographs of simple objects against a black background, which he would move in the process to make a ghostly, abstract shape. Volume two is devoted to Changing New York. It was a hugely ambitious and physically dangerous undertaking that needed a good deal of planning and organisation: how to find the right vantage point, how to carry an enormous plate up dozens of floors, how to calculate the wind resistance, the level of light etc. The importance of the correct vantage point was not only for distance but to accentuate the tight layering and juxtaposition of buildings in the city; to show the difference in tempo between the older low-rise blocks and the skyscrapers.
