Volume I traces the long search for a Mennonite identity from the origin of Anabaptism through to the point when the Mennonites were legally barred from entry to Canada. The book tells the narrative of struggle, fragmentation, separation and accommodation. Volume II explains the critical period in Canadian Mennonite history when their survival and identiry were under the threat of assimilation and there was fragmentation within their communities, both pressures felt under the umbrella of the Great Depression. Volume III tells of how World War II challenged the pacifist views of Mennonite communities, initiated the process of urbanization, brought in its wake a new influx of Mennonite people from Europe, and how the shift from a rural to an urban society impacted tradition, the people, and their communities.
