About This Item

London: Henry G. Bohn, 1849. Hardcover. Fair. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcovers, two-volume match set bound in full leather boards trimmed in gilt and ornately decorated on spine. Both volumes have the front and rear boards detached which, for some unknown reason, the Marquess of Bute tore the covers off of most of his collection. If the boards were attached these books are great as VG to VG-. Both volumes are complete, the leather shows scuffing along with edging corner bumps/wear. Spines show chipping along the edges along with some horizontal cracks. Both front pastedowns contains armorial color bookplate bearing the name Johannes Patricius Crichton Stuart Marchio de Bute in the rear pastedown contains a black-and-white bookplate showing this came from the personal library at Cardiff Castle of Wales. Both front and rear bookplates contain the family crests. The internal binding and condition of the pages is very good and binding is tight. There is some light soiling on the end pages but the text pages are clean and crisp. Volume 1 contains a foldout chart as the frontispiece and volume 2 has quite a bit of foxing to the end pages and title page. There are some small spots of foxing on the text pages but overall book interior is very clean and attractive. The printing quality of this book far exceeds the typical cloth bound editions and was typical of the Cardiff Castle collection. Volume 1 contains 568 pages and volume 2 contains 604 pages. Although both the front and rear boards are completely detached a good bookbinder should be able to repair this which would give you a beautiful set of books with a unique history of ownership. The only other issue worth noting is both rear boards have a darkened area on the exterior, upper left corners. Sale is for the 2 volume set.

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
