About This Item

Duke University Press, 2001. Softcover. Fine. Illustrated softcovers. Fine, fresh, apparently unread copy. ix+ 413 pp. with index, bibliography, Illustrated with photos. Most people today are familiar with, or have at least heard of, the all-women baseball teams of the All American Girl's Baseball League, that formed during the Second World War while many of the men were away. Far fewer are familiar with the so called "All-Girl" jazz and swing bands of the same era, many formed for the same reason. In this insightful, informative study, the author, who found herself surprised by the lack of documantary evidence dealing with these bands, delves into the forgotten history the subject in detail. There were hundreds of such bands, both African American and white, all around the country that formed when the demand for swing music skyrocketed due to the war conditions. Though all-women bands had been around since the 1920s, they now barnstormed ballrooms, theaters, dance halls, military installations and USO stages. Filled with first hand accounts of more than 100 women who performed during this era.
