Among his many accomplishments, Benjamin Franklin ws instrumental in founding the first major civilian hospital and medical school in the American colonies; studied the efficacy of smallpox innoculation, and even investigated the causes of the common cold. The author examines how Franklin approached medicine in the spirit of the Enlightenment and with the mindset of a natural philosopher, seeking cures for diseases and methods of alleviating symptoms.
