This is perhaps the most thorough and insightful biography of one of the great jazz muscians composers. The author examines not only his life, but his music but the factors that converged to influence the development of his artistry. J. J. Johnson cooperated with the authors in their work. Jointly published by The Scarecrow Press and the Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University. Contains an index, extensive discography, filmography, catalog of compositions, and a bibliography in the rear. Original black cloth publisher's covers with spine lettering. This is a nice clean, tight and unmarked book with no interior or exterior markings, no previous owner names and no bookplates. There is a small dog ear to the corner of one page in the index. The dust jacket in similarly nice condition with no chips, tears, or markings. The dust jacket is now in a protective, removable, acetate cover. This is the true 1985 first edition, not a later reprint or reissue.
