Numerous archive photographs to plates. Publishers' midnight blue cloth with silver titles to spine in unclipped pictorial dust-jacket. Publishers' Review request slip and a printed copy of the review by Professor John L Taylor loosely inserted. Spine lightly creased at tips but cover cloth bright. Author's signature, without dedication, to title page; 5 cm closed tear at hinge of half-title and a couple of marks to fore-edge otherwise contents clean. Jacket slightly creased to edge with small surface nick to spine. A Near Fine copy in like jacket. Biography of the influential Russian architectural scholar who fled Nazi persecution to become the authority on the Buildings of England, by the first of his biographers to have access to the great man's private papers. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.

Synopsis

SUSIE HARRIES is a writer specializing in culture, history and the arts. Born in 1951 in London, where she now lives with her husband Meirion and their two sons, she read classics and classical philosophy at Newnham College, Cambridge, and St Anne's College, Oxford. She has co-authored seven books with her husband, including major works on twentieth-century arts: The Academy of St Martin in the Fields (1981), The War Artists (1983) and A Pilgrim Soul: A Life of Elisabeth Lutyens (1989). She has also written for the Independent and reviewed books on the arts for The Times Literary Supplement .
