Large octavo, 26 cm, in dark red cloth ( a little faded), gilt titles and decorations, t.e.g. An ex libris copy with the usual markings, but the copy appears never to have circulated and is unopened. Original green cloth backed dust wrappers. 39 plates in color 85 photogravure plates. Hundreds of intext illustrations. Folding map. A spectacular set complete with the two original dustwrappers. Arctic Biblio. 6676; Ricks p.116. Originally planned as a bear hunt, Harriman, a railroad magnate, invited many of the leading scientists of the day, and the undertaking grew to be possibly the largest and most elaborate private expedition over mounted. A steamer was chartered, and the party cruised the northwest coast between May & July, 1899, reaching as far north as Port Clarence. Many of the photos are by Edward Curtis, and the book is a beautiful production. Ten additional volumes of scientific results were published in ensuing years. 1902
