Yanov provides a provocative and highly original study of the role of Tsar Ivan IV-known as Ivan the Terrible-in Russia's past, and his power over Russia's present and future. He explores the bloody revolution of 1565 that led to a reign of terror, when Ivan brushed aside Russia's European heritage and fundamentally altered its future. Russian history since then may be seen as a cycle of attempts to break out of the autocratic mold, followed by violent restorations of the ancient regime, headed in turn by Peter I, Paul I, Nicholas I, Alexander III, and finally, by Lenin and Stalin. His special theme is the interplay of power and ideas. He traces the history of what he calls Ivaniana-the crucial debate over Ivan the Terrible, through 15 generations of Russian historians. 339 pages with bibliography and index. 6.25 x 9.25 inches. 1981, University of California Press, Berkeley, CA, USA
