New York: Tudor Plublishing, 1947. Original cloth. xiii, + 320pp. Book clean and square. Spine firm, gilt title there-on. Slight bumps on heel and foot. Small original seller's sticker affixed to front pastedown, otherwise tanned strips on fep's. Art-illustrated dustjacket noticeably edgeworn, nipped, with jagged tears, creased and abraded. 'Tales Of The Monks' were the most popular stories of the Middle Ages, and were intended to serve as a manual for the preachers, compiled mainly to illustrate moral and religious virtue.From 165 hand-lettered manuscripts in both Latin and German, the first English translation was published in a black letter edition between 1510 and 1515. Revision over many editions included the Bohn's edition in 1877, which forms the basis of this text. Contents include: Prefatory Note, The Text; Tales 1-181. Book weight approx. 700g.
