About This Item

London, United Kingdom: Penguin Books, 2012. Trade paperback. Good. Cover has some wear and soiling.. xxii, 564, [6] p. Illustrations. Maps. Notes. List of Archival Sources Cited. List of Works Cited. Index. From Wikipedia: "Sir Ian Kershaw, FBA (born 29 April 1943) is a British historian and author who has chiefly focused on the history of 20th century Germany. He is regarded as one of the world's leading experts on Adolf Hitler and Nazi Germany. Kershaw served as historical adviser on numerous BBC documentaries, notably The Nazis: A Warning From History and War of the Century. He taught a module titled 'Germans against Hitler'. The End: Hitler's Germany 1944 45 is a historical narrative charting the course of World War II between the period of the failed 20 July plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler in July 1944, by Stauffenberg, until late May 1945, when the last of the Nazi regime's leaders were arrested and the government dissolved. Kershaw has said that this particular period had been an "unresolved issue" for him as he had never written on the final stages of the war. Kershaw looks for answers to the question of why Germany did not capitulate when there was no chance of victory.

Synopsis

From the preeminent Hitler biographer, a fascinating and original exploration of how the Third Reich was willing and able to fight to the bitter end of World War II Countless books have been written about why Nazi Germany lost the Second World War, yet remarkably little attention has been paid to the equally vital questions of how and why the Third Reich did not surrender until Germany had been left in ruins and almost completely occupied. Drawing on prodigious new research, Ian Kershaw, an award-winning historian and the author of Fateful Choices , explores these fascinating questions in a gripping and focused narrative that begins with the failed bomb plot in July 1944 and ends with the death of Adolf Hitler and the German capitulation in 1945. The End paints a harrowing yet enthralling portrait of the Third Reich in its last desperate gasps.
