New York: Harper & Brothers, 1945. 1st Edition . Hardcover. VG-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover, light brown cloth boards shows spotting from handling wear, edges and corners are lightly bumps/worn. The book would grade hire but there is a burn mark on the front board, lower left section. The internal binding is good, no hinge issues. The front pastedown contains the original owner's name, no other markings found in the book. No bookplates, no library markings, no underlining etc. The end pages and pastedowns show light spotting and foxing, text pages are not affected. Stated first edition on the copyright page along with codes 5-5 and D-U.

Reissue, the year following first publication. 238pp. In brown cloth-covered boards with black titles on spine. Fore-edge untrimmed. 8vo. Boards very gently rubbed and rounded at corners and spine tips. Scratch in cloth along spine, a few very mild marks. Lightly toned endpapers, else internally neat, clean and tight. Author's first novel, published before he became known as a leasing Hollywood screenwriter. Novel was the basis for the 1947 film noir, 'Crossfire', starring Robert Mitchum, considered one of the first studio efforts to confront anti-Semitism. Now a hard to find title.

Book condition: Very good with gently bumped edges and subtly rubbed corners. A couple small, subtle spots on covers near edges. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair with long closed tear through corner of front panel, which is surprisingly subtle due to it being housed in a dust jacket protector. Edges rubbed, corners chipped, and a couple short closed tears in edges. Scratch on spine. Rear panel soiled. Inscribed by Brooks to former owner on front free endsheet.

A nearly fine copy in a good to very good dust jacket with shallow chipping to the spine ends and corner tips, front flap fold quite rubbed with some splits, spine color slightly faded. (23551). Octavo, cloth. The author's first book. Written when the author was a serviceman in the Marines the story has themes of racial bigotry and anti-Semitism and centers on homophobia and murder. Source for the noir film "Crossfire" (1947), which changed the theme to anti-semitism.
