Scaolarly reappraisal of the period often referred to as the Golden Age of the Roman Empire (31 B.C to 193 A.D.). A book in three parts, the first covers the expansion and consolidation of the Roman Empire; the second discusses the present state of research and some of the controversies that have ariosen (e.g. the notion of slavery, colonizarion, oscial tensions); the final part comprises a detailed and comprehensive bibliography which has been thoroughly updated since the original French edition.
