1966. First Edition, First Printing. Fine Hardcover in a Near Fine Slip Case with Publisher's Wrap-around Band. Near Fine/Fine. Illustrations by Masakazu Kuwata. Textured  blue-green laid-paper boards with silver gilt spine titles and stamped front decoration; Slipcase with silver and red titles and decoration. 8vo; 8.25 by 8 inches [44pages]. No Flaws or Blemishes but mild sunning on the spine; slipcase has some sunfading. Has publisher's wrap-arounf band with artist and story information. A classic tale about Hoichi, a blind musician, or biwa hoshi, who performs for an audience of ghosts.

First published in the Atlantic Monthly, August 1903. This story was one of four folk tales adapted for Kwaidan, the 1965 film directed by Masaki Kobayashi.

Masakazu Kuwata has illustrated this famous story with a combination of traditional Chinese and Japanese paper-cutting and woodcut-print techniques. The introduction by Donald Keene provides the historic background against which the story is set.

The Author, Koizumi Yakumo, born Patrick Lafcadio Hearn, was a Greek-Japanese writer, translator, and teacher who introduced the culture and literature of Japan to the West.
