SUBSCRIBERS COPY OWNED BY SUBSCRIBER LISTED IN BOOK AND WITH ADDITIONAL MANUSCRIPT LEAF SIGNED BY ANSON. First Edition. Quarto, measuring approximately 260mm x 210mm. 34, 420 pages, with 42 engraved folding plates and maps. Bound in a contemporary full calf binding. England, at war with Spain in 1739, equipped eight ships under the command of George Anson to harass the Spaniards on the western coast of South America, for the purpose of cutting off Spanish supplies of wealth from the Pacific area. The Spanish fleet sent out to oppose the British ran into storms; provisions ran out and many ships were wrecked. Anson continued taking prizes during 1741-42, off the Pacific coast, and in June, 1743, captured the Manila galleon containing a vast treasure in Gold and Silver. Cox I, p. 49. Hill 1817. National Maritime Museum I, 109. Sabin 1625. . Signed. First Edition. Manuscript.

Later quarter leather and papered boards (bound without the wrappers); title page a little foxed, with two early inkstamps lightly (and almost entirely) erased from it; a very good copy of a great rarity. Internally new endpapers and blanks have been added. This set has been matched against the reference copy held by the Hathi Trust and matches it apart from a misplaced plate, a missing plate, a small misbound section in the appendix and a misplaced map… Read More

London: John Stockdale, 1801. Hardcover. Near fine. First octavo edition and second edition overall. Six volumes uniformly bound in recent quarter leather and marbled boards, complete with two large folding maps/charts and 17 folding plates; 2 pages of ads at the end of Volume VI. Vancouver sailed by way of the Cape of Good Hope to Australia, then to New Zealand, Hawaii, and the northwest coast of America -- discovering previously unknown geographical features in each locale. In three seasons' work, Vancouver surveyed the coast of California with remarkable accuracy, visited a number of the Spanish settlements in Alta California, investigated the Strait of Juan de Fuca, circumnavigated Vancouver island, and disproved the existence of any passage between the Pacific and Hudson Bay. In all, Vancouver's party sailed about 55,000… Read More

Description:
Indianapolis: Dog Ear Publishing, January 2013. Trade Paperback. Fine. Slight reading wear to corners, otherwise pristine. Not from a library. No remainder mark. Not clipped. Not damaged. Suitable for gifting. 163 pages. The 25 authors of this book were volunteers in the first Peace Corps rural community development project in Africa: Sierra Leone, 1965-67. They are also the first group to tell a collective story of Peace Corps volunteers, anywhere. The Peace Corps was in its infancy then, and memories of John Kennedy were strong among the young volunteers. Sierra Leone was also in its infancy in the first few years after independence, before military coups and tribal warfare became common. The authors forthrightly recount their feelings of loneliness and isolation, and their frightening experiences with secret societies and witchcraft, but their uniquely optimistic "can-do" American attitude brought most through a great life experience.

Description:
London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme & Brown, 1823. 1st Edition . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. pp: [viii]ix-xii [1]2-544. FIRST EDITION. Bound in brown half-leather over marbled boards, title in gilt within a red title piece. The first edition of the author's first book. William Wilson (1772-1849) inherited a substantial sum from an uncle, and decided to indulge his passion for travel. He travelled throughout Europe and The Middle East and wrote a series of books. This was his first, and it was the most popular, going through several editions. This is a good copy as all plates, including the frontispiece, have been excised. The boards show moderate wear, heavier at the spine ends. The front hinge is cracked. The text block is mainly clean with a few marks of unknown origin.
