San Francisco: Black & Brown Trading Stamp Corporation, n.d.. Pamphlet. Staplebound booklet, rather worn with tape repairs to spine, with every page covered by sheets of stamps featuring James Brown. Also included is an incomplete booklet, missing the covers, but interesting because some of the pages are unused, revealing the incentive messages printed on them. Former Oakland Raiders football player Art Powell established the company in 1969 as an incentive program to shop at Black businesses. Modeled after other trading stamp programs, participating merchants would award stamps with purchases, and after the entire booklet was full, it could be traded in for $3.00 worth of merchandise at any participating retailer. The program began in Oakland and the Bay Area, but appears to have spread to other cities as well, though it was short-lived.
