Kollontai did not identify as a feminist. She understood "feminism" as bourgeois politics, the politics of a particular class of women. However, she helped liberalize divorce, gave women access to their own earnings, and advocated for women's right to sexual autonomy. Kollontai also was the first woman in history to become an official member of a governing cabinet.

The book was issued by the important female publisher Mariia Malykh (1879-1967). Her Marxist publishing house was mostly concentrated on social and political issues. In 1909 it was forced to be closed and Maria emigrated to Switzerland.
