The Solemnity of a Wedding and Brilliancy of a Married Life When Lived According to Christian Examples Our Saviour Wrought His First Miracle at a -- Marriage Supper. c. 1820?

Pure Americana: trimmed, stained, chipped, but still pretty wonderful.

Very uncommon early American engraving. OCLC locates 2 examples, both with AAS. "Hamildays," an AAS blog about Alexander Hamilton and his era inspired by the hit musical,, referenced the print in a 2016 entry about Alexander Hamilton and his era inspired by the hit musical, used to illustrate the track "Best of Wives and Best of Women"—Act 2, Track 21. And it's easy to see why: the image includes a mother breastfeeding her child, newlyweds dancing on a checkered floor (heart shaped inset), and, most significantly, a passage encouraging a husband to refrain from losing his temper.

Hang this in your room, and when provoked to anger look at it and ask yourself the question, Am I not wrong? If so, adobt [sic] this short prayer, God forgive. On the other hand, if your companion acknowledge by words or action, then forgive and be mild in her presence.

Both AAS prints can be seen digitally; though they have the same engraver and similar imagery, there are striking differences in the layout and border designs. Our copy, though trimmed, is largely complete -- compare it to AAS Catalog Record #449059

We found it a few weeks back in a CT barn, paper-clipped to a 1959 letter from Goodspeed's Book Shop, Inc. politely explaining that the print was "nothing for which we would have a market. The engraver's name has been trimmed off and in its present condition it would be difficult to sell." A model of restraint and polite rejection. That was 60 years ago.
