[Texas] [Photography] [Women] Mary E. Jacobson. 1. The Alamo. Built 1718. San Antonio: M. E. Jacobson. [1889-1891] Sepia tone image on black card. 17.8 x 10.5 cm, on card approximately 18.5 x 12. Jacobson imprint on card face and verso shows advertising text for her series Picturesque San Antonio. Overall very good condition with strong tones.
OCLC shows a listing for this photo but no libraries holding it. Yale has a set of Jacobson San Antonio photographs including one of the Alamo. Rare Book Hub shows no auction or catalog listings. The photograph shows Jacobson's address at 2 E. Houston St., San Antonio, Texas. She is listed at address in 1889-90 and 1891 San Antonio City directories. Jacobson's photograph offers more than just a view of the great shrine to the independence of Texas; it also reveals the looming presence of the "Alamo Building," a commercial establishment that catered to tourists. A French merchant, Honoré Grenet, bought the Long Barrack and courtyard in 1877 and covered it with a wooden structure as part of a museum and grocery store. Hugo and Schmeltzer Co. bought the store in 1884.

Simon Bamberger was a Utah entrepreneur who was the fourth Governor of the State of Utah and the first non-Mormon. He was involved in hotels, railroads and mining. In 1902 Bamberger acquired the gold mining properties in Delamar, Nevada. After sinking a new shaft completed in 1906, the mine closed in 1909. These photographs show the milling of timbers for the mine and are identified by handwritten notes on the back: "De Lamar, Nevada. Interior of Bamberger De Lamar Gold Mines Co.'s sawmill. Here all the timber is framed for the mine. The timber is used to support the earth above the timber." Unusual views of milling timbers used to support the mining tunnels, an important element of hard rock mining, and an uncommon association item with an important… Read More

Great image of a cowboy and his horse paying his respects at a grave on the range. Original Smith images with his stamp are uncommon on the market. "Growing up in Bonham, Texas, Erwin Smith knew he wanted to be a cowboy and an artist. The era of great trail drives was ending, and he was determined to document the open-range lifestyle before it disappeared completely. Smith gained experience by working on ranches and studying painting and sculpting at art schools in Chicago and Boston before he realized that the photographs he used as preliminary studies were works of art themselves. Between 1905 and the mid-1920s, he photographed ranch work and life in Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas, producing some of the best-known… Read More
