London: Heinemann. 1951. 1st UK ed., octavo, original green cloth boards with gilt vignette of alchemical symbol upper board, b&w illus (full-page and text illus), pp x, 246. Boards flecked. A handwritten comment has been tipped in to the inner flap of the dustjacket, at lower corner. Internally clean. Dustjacket has small chips and small closed tears with some loss to rear. Very good condition in like d.j., repaired and protected. Uncommon as first UK edition. Frank Sherwood Taylor (1897 - 1956) was a British historian of science, museum curator, and chemist who was Director of the Science Museum. "The Alchemists" is a comprehensive, well-illustrated history of alchemy and its links to chemistry. Chapters include the ideas of alchemists, the first alchemists, signs and symbols, Chinese alchemy, Islamic alchemy, European alchemists, fourteenth-century alchemy, English alchemists, transmutations, the hermetic philosophy, and the relation of alchemy to science. 1st UK Edition.
