About This Item
New York City: E. P. Dutton & Company, Inc., 1941. First edition. Cloth. Very Good. 8.5" by 6". Not Stated. A first edition, fourth printing of this account of Russell's experiences of living and working in Nazi Germany. The first edition of this uncommon work in the publisher's original cloth binding. The dust wrapper for this work has been cut into four parts and tipped in to the front paste down and front free end paper, with one part loosely inserted. In this work, William Russell (19152000), who worked at the American Embassy in Berlin, details his experiences of living and working in Nazi Germany between August 1939 and April 1940. His aim was to argue that most ordinary German people only sided temporarily with the Nazis during the war, and that many held the Nazi authorities in contempt. Through anecdotes, press cuttings, and rumours, he describes various aspects of the Second World War, such as long queues of people seeking emigrant visas and the beginning of the invasion of Norway. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally generally smart, with spotting to the spine, and fading to the spine and rear board. Shelf wear to the bottom corner of the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good
