About This Item

(San Kristobal, New Mexico: Toad Books, 1971. Softcover. Very Good. First edition. With a review by Timothy Leary. Octavo. 211, [7] pp. Pictorial wrappers. Light wear on the wraps, a small label on the sunned spine, and a "Neo-American Church, Vergennes, Vermont" stamp on the last page, very good, with a letter laid in, written by Arthur Kleps to "Walter" (likely Walter Houston Clark), dated 5-28-77, which begins "I think it was reprehensible of Bench Press to put your blurb on the cover when they knew the text contained a passage giving you a series of raps on the knuckles. It was done without my knowledge and is consistent with the low taste shown in the treatment of the cover photograph. By all means threaten to sue the bastards unless your blurb is removed from the second printing of the book...", signed by Art Kleps, the verso being an order information sheet of Art Kleps books. The book referred to is likely an early printing of Kleps' *Millbrook: the True Story of the Early Years of the Psychedelic Revolution*. Arthur Kleps, who joined Timothy Leary at Millbrook, founded the Neo-American Church, a religious organization based on the use of psychedelic drugs as a sacrament, referring to himself as Cheif Boo Hoo. Walter Houston Clark was a psychologist who wrote about the religious connection to psychedelic drugs.
