Contemporary red half morocco and red paper-covered boards, flat spine divided into five compartments with gilt filet and gilt Greek key roll, titled and numbered in two compartments, "coiffes Lyonnaises" headcaps. Some light foxing throughout, still a beautiful, near fine set. Armorial bookplates partially removed from each volume. First Chompré translation, first Paris edition. Traduits de L'Anglais due la Quinzième Édition par N.M. Chompré. xxxi, [i], 622, [2]; [iv], 636, [2]; [vi], 594, xxviii, [2]; vi, 579, [3]; vi, 554, [2]; vi, 410, liv, 117, [3] pp. 6 vols. 8vo. A beautiful set of the first Paris edition of Blackstone's Commentaries of the Laws of England, translated by Chompré from the London edition of 1809. The first edition in French, translated from the 1770 fourth English edition by August Pierre Damiens de Gomicourt, was published in Brussels in six volumes, 1774-6. A pirated edition, it was not a particular faithful translation and was superseded by this authorized edition of 1822-3. PMM 212 (for first)
