About This Item
London: Jonathan Cape,, 1948. An inscribed copy with original sketches First UK edition, first impression, signed by the author on the title page, and with pen-and-ink sketches by him of the titular animals on the front free endpaper, which is additionally inscribed, "Drawn by the world famous author for Louise. 22.1.60". Like the inscription, this novel delights in self-parody: its protagonist, Mr White, is tasked with building an ark to survive a modern great flood. "The author's funniest novel" (Crane, p. 134), it was first published in America the previous year. Octavo. Original blue boards, spine and front cover lettered in green, vignette on front cover in green. With dust jacket. In-text schematic illustrations related to shipbuilding after the author. Bookseller's ticket on front free endpaper. Spine cocked, edges faded, slight spotting of boards and contents; jacket spine toned, edges rubbed and chipped, without loss of text, a few marks, unclipped: a very good copy in good jacket. John K. Crane, T. H. White, 1974.
