About This Item
First edition, and a fine copy of one of Pope's most celebrated invectives, addressed to his physician and life-long friend, Arbuthnot. It famously contains Pope's savaging of Queen Caroline's confidant and society gossip Lord Hervey, who is named "Paris" here but "Sporus" in subsequent editions:
"Let Paris tremble" - "What? that Thing of silk,
Paris, that mere white Curd of Ass's milk?
Satire or Shame alas! Can Paris feel?
Who breaks a Butterfly upon a Wheel?"
