About This Item

London: John Murray, 1832-1835.. 3 vols. 8vo. (19 x 11.5 cm). Contemporary full olive-green calf by Hayday, sides ruled with double gilt fillets, spines with raised bands and richly gilt-decorated compartments, red and brown morocco labels to each, gilt inner dentelles, marbled endpapers and edges. 4 engraved plates, vignettes in the letter press. Armorial bookplates of Samuel Eaton Edge to front pastedowns. Some light rubbing to extremities, spotting to leather, contents clean save for the rare occasional spot, generally a very good set handsomely bound. A charming set of Edward Jesse's comprehensive study in natural history, itself a fascinating and detailed early study of the habits, instincts, and peculiarities of British wildlife and associated subjects. Edward Jesse (1780-1868), Surveyor of Her Majesty s Parks and Palaces, was a noted writer of natural history observations. He was the last to hold the title of the office of surveyor-general of the royal parks and palaces.
