About This Item

London: Chatto & Windus. Octavo; 536pp plus advertisements dated 1873. Coloured frontispiece; engraved line illustrations of signboards throughout (100 in number stated on the title page). Light foxing on the preliminaries and late pages. Previous owner's name neatly written in ink on a blank preliminary. A very comprehensive survey and discourse on the history of signboards "from the earliest times to the present day" (i.e. the mid-nineteenth century). Cloth-covered boards with gilt illustration on the front cover and gilt lettering and illustration on the spine. In very good condition given that this book is nearly 140 years old: tight, straight and minor wear only. Contents mainly dealing with public house (pub) signs. A must for anybody interested or researching the subject and would make a thoughtful present for the right person. . Very Good. Hardcover. Seventh Edition. 1873.
