About This Item
London: William S Orr & Co, 1851. . 286 pages. Gilt decoration to spine, but exterior is washed out and worn, and the book is very shaken at the front. This book, first issued in 1837, is one of three titles on female Christian life and spirituality, the first two being The Marys: or the Beauty of Female Holiness; and The Marthas: or the Varieties of Female Piety. These are not biographies but description and exhortation of the spiritual Christian life, supplemented by allegories. Robert Philip (1791-1858), a Scots congregationalist, was the first minister of Maberly Chapel, Kingsland, in the London suburb of Hackney, which still stands today, restored in the 21st century as an artists' studio after warehouse use and dereliction, appearing as the location of the first series of BBC TV's Great British Sewing Bee..
