Serge's novelization based upon his own time in exile in Orenburg, near the modern day border between Russia and Kazakhstan. A stark look at Old Bolsheviks, Socialist Revolutionaries, and Left Oppositionists in exile and under the thumb of Soviet authority, though nevertheless a brimming novel looking to the future, toward the final Revolution.
