The story within a story is mainly about the Fraziers, the sole inhabitants of an isolated desert oasis watered by an underground river. It is here that family friend and famous painter of desert scenes, Galen Andrews, tells the story of Frazier to his chauffeur, Croy, who is the first person protagonist of our story. Frazier, a bitter ex-marine with a bullet wound, arrives at the oasis and falls in love with the desert and the unusual people that he encounters. There's also a blossoming romance and a search for hidden treasure. He began his career as a lawyer, but with a strong interest in writing and acting that led him to switch careers. In the early 1920s, two of his plays were adapted into films.
