About This Item

Boston, MA: Roberts Brothers, 1898. Hardcover. Good. Roberts Brothers, 1898 (copyright 1891). Original 19th century edition. Brown cloth with minor spotting. A lovely copy. Contemporary name on front endpaper in sepia ink. The first 2 short chapters set the stage: "The Body's Guidance", and "Perversions of the Body's Guidance". Perhaps best remembered for the warm endorsement provided by William James in his widely reprinted essay, “The Gospel of Relaxation,” Annie Payson Call (1853–1940) was a pioneer who spoke with a woman's authority and voice to the emerging somatic self-help movement and relaxation therapies at the turn of the century. Against the background of American Delsartism, the flourishing of health movements, and innovations in dance forms of the period, Call was an innovator in American approaches to movement that place bodily awareness and sensory knowledge at the heart of movement experience and training.

Synopsis

No matter what our work in life, whether scientific, artistic, or domestic, it is the same body through which the power is transmitted; and the same freedom in the conductors for impression and expression is needed, to whatever end the power may be moved, from the most simple action to the highest scientific or artistic attainment. The quality of power differs greatly; the results are widely different, but the laws of transmission are the same. So wonderful is the unity of life and its laws!
