Paris: Calmann Levy, 1885-1890. Leather. Very Good. 8" by 5.5". None. Three plays from French dramatist Victorien Sardou, bound in two quarter morocco bindings. Victorien Sardou was a French dramatist, best remembered today for his development, along with Eugene Scribe, of the well-made play.Consisting of: the 1890 third edition of 'Rabagas', a satire of the revolutionary spirit; the 1889 edition of 'Nos Intimes!', in which the vulgarities and selfishness of the middle classes are mocked, and the 1885 third edition of the comedy 'Le Degel'.With the bookplate of Elizabeth Sherman to each front pastedown. Sherman was the youngest child of Charles Taylor Sherman and Eliza Williams. She was also the niece of the American Civil War General, William Tecumseh Sherman and Senator John Sherman. Considered one of the most beautiful and intelligent women in the Washington of the late 1870s to early 1880s Elizabeth was romantically linked with the American novelist, journalist and historian Henry Adams. In quarter morocco bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Rubbing to back strip tails and raised bands. Bookplate to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages lightly age toned to perimeters, but generally clean and bright. Very Good
