An association copy of the four volume first edition of Sir Walter Scott's works of historical fiction, 'Tales of the Crusader's'. With the bookplate of his friend, Sir Henry Jardine, to each volume. The complete four volume first edition of this work, consisting of two historical novels, 'The Talisman' - set during the Third Crusade - and 'The Betrothed', set in the Welsh Marches in the twelfth century.'Tales of the Crusaders' is viewed as a subset series within Scott's Waverley novels, published between 1814 and 1832. As with the majority of Scott's early Waverley editions, Scott's name does not appear to the title page.With the armorial bookplate of Scott's friend, Sir Henry Jardine, to each front pastedown. An Edinburgh based antiquarian and solicitor, in 1823 he founded the Bannatyne Club alongside Sir Walter Scott.With half titles to each volume, but bound without the publisher's catalogue to the rear of volume IV. In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Rubbing and discolouration to back strip, with significant rubbing to the centre of boards. All joints starting, with boards holding firm. Armorial bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot. Good
