About This Item
London: Ernest Benn Limited, 1929 Book. Illus. by Portraits By Various Artists.. Good Plus. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Brown cloth on boards. Previous owner's name. In 1827, Frances (Fanny)Trollope, wife of a lawyer in England, took her family to Nashoba, a commune in the U.S. After a short stay they moved to Cincinnati. Her motives for going toi the States are not clear, but she seemed to have an interest in the anti-slavery movement. At any rate, she used some of this experience to develop her subsequent writing career. Fanny Kemble, a British actress and abolitionist, married Pierce Butler, a plantation owner with many slaves. After they separated in 1847 she toured the U.S., but did not publish her experiences until 1863. Harriet Martineau was an established sociologist and writer who visited the States in 1832-34. 304 pp..
