About This Item

London; Printed by C. Mercier and Co. for John Scott, 1804., 1804. Hard Cover. FIRST EDITION. Quarto, pp. [8], 130. 9 copper-engraved plates as called for. Full polished calf with 4 raised bands, gilt titles to maroon and black calf labels to spine, and floral decoration to compartment. Double gilt border to boards with floral border in blind within; gilt dentelles; marbled edges and endpapers. Blue silk placemarker. Binding slightly surface scuffed, with bruised corners. A little scattered foxing, mainly to endpapers and plate margins. No annotation or inscriptions. A clean copy in a handsome binding. Continuation of Pennant's "A Tour from Downing to Alston-Moor" published in 1801 (Downing Hall in Flintshire was Pennant's country estate). Pennant (1726-98) was a Welsh naturalist and antiquarian, regarded as an authority in his time and cited by Thomas Bewick in his "History of British Birds"; numerous marine species were named in his honour. His tours into Scotland inspired Samuel Johnson to follow in his footsteps, and his work was highly regarded both in his lifetime and beyond (the tours through the North of England and studies of India were all published posthumously). Scarce.
