"The tuba has long been well known as a regular and valuable member of the symphonic orchestra, but the other members of its family are less familiar, although they are to be found in a wide range of music-making from Salvation Army meetings to esoteric avant-garde jazz. In his book, the first to deal with these instruments in detail, Cllifford Bevan lists the name of over 500 members of the family. He gives the acoustic background and traces the development of modern varieties from the early bugle- (or bullock-) horn through cornett, serpent, key bugle and ophicleide to the invention of the valve, the bass tuba and the saxhorns, flicorni, helicons, duplex and many others." - from dust-jacket blurb. .
