B.T.Batsford. 1951 (1st.). size in inches 9 x 6. In green cloth covers with gold to spine. With illustrated dustwrapper. In very good condition with very good dustwrapper (dw; in removable plastic cover, inside cover has sellotape. Slightly rubbed along bottom and top edge. Not Price clipped). Inscription on endpapers as well as Private bookplate of Sarah and Martin Mortimer. Else a clean and tight copy. 152pp. With b/w and colour plates and line drawings. Examines the Italian workmen brought to England by Henry VIII, Pietro Torregiani and Benedetto da Rovezzano among them, and their work and influence. Owing to the Reformation, the influx of Italian artists soon came to an end. Later when domestic building started again on a vast scale, the Renaissance influence no longer came directly from Italy but rather through the Low Countries with important contacts like Erasmus, Thomas More, and Vredeman de Vries and Hans Holbein.
