Scarce publisher's hardcover edition of the second, third and fourth issues of Verve, one of the most influential journals of art and literature ever published. Original red cloth stamped in silver, complete with original covers (minor wear and one spot to cloth). Complete with all lithographs. Number Two includes the original cover lithograph by Georges Braque, and 4 original lithographs (2 each) by Wassily Kandinsky and Andre Masson, and texts by James Joyce ('A Phoenix Park Nocturne'), Ernest Hemingway ('The Heat and the Cold'), Georges Bataille, Henri Michaux, Andre Gide, Paul Valery, et al. Number Three includes the original cover lithograph by Pierre Bonnard, and 4 original lithograph plates by Marc Chagall, Joan Miro, Paul Klee, and Rattner, plus 6 lithographs after Indian art, plus texts by Georges Bataille, Paul Claudel, Henri Michaux, Paul Valery, Rabndranath Tagore, et al. Number Three includes the original cover lithograph by George Rouault, 2 original linocuts and a striking original color lithograph ('The Dance') by Henri Matisse, plus 4 original lithographs by Andre Derain, lithographic reproductions of 14th-century Italian images, and photigraphs by Brassai, Bill Brandt, and texts by Jean-Paul Sartre, Federico Garcia Lorca, Georges Bataille, Henri Michaux, Rainer Maria Rilke, Paul Valery, et al. There is an occasional smudge to a text margin, but the lithographs and linocuts and clean and crisp.
