The Great Wagon Roads that Opened the Southwest: 1823 -1883. Chapters on Old Helena and the Cart War as well as much on the Big Bend area. Isolated silver mines discovered by the Spanish in northern Mexico precipitated three important trade routes between Mexico and the United States. In longest use was the route that began in Indianola and was discontinued in 1877 when a hurricane destroyed that important seaport on Matagorda Bay. Includes historical information on W. H. C. Whiting whose party included Policarpo Rodriguez; Mexican Cart War; John Coffee (Jack) Hays and the Hays Expedition and much more of interst to these early Texas travelers and the roads they helped forge.

After the attack on Pearl Harbor he volunteered for service with the U.S. Navy, was commissioned, and served until he was released in 1946. He was director of public information for the Social Security Administration for nearly two decades. After he retired from Federal service, he devoted himself to writing about the Southwest in the nineteenth century.
