About the author

HUGH RUPPERSBURG is Emeritus University Professor of English at the University of Georgia. He is the literature section editor of the New Georgia Encyclopedia (NGE).
JOHN C.INSCOE is the Albert B. Saye Professor of History and University Professor of History at the University of Georgia. He is the founding editor of the NGE, as well as the nineteenth-century history section editor. Originally launched in 2004 andredesigned in 2013, the NGE is the first state encyclopedia to be conceived and designed exclusively for publication online.
