Spanish in New Orleans and Louisiana, The Hardcover - 2000

by de Pedro MarquÈs de Casa Mena, JosÈ

From the jacket flap

"The book . . . was written as much for the people of Spain, who know very little about this, as well as for the North American public, which has associated New Orleans and Louisiana to an excessive extent with its French roots and knows nothing about what it really should know in order to do honor to the truth of its Spanish past."
--Jos1/2 Montero de Pedro, Marqu1/2s de Casa Mena

Twenty years after it was first published in Spanish, this extraordinary history and examination of Spanish influences and culture is being published in a translated edition.

Although the Spanish colonial period spanned the relatively short time between 1763 and 1803, its effects persist even today in a variety of facets of New Orleans culture such as cuisine, architecture, and even language.

Montero de Pedro also examines in detail the remaining influences of Spanish culture that were still prevalent when he served as consul general of Spain in New Orleans at the end of the 1970s.

Born in Santander, Spain, in 1930, Jos1/2 Montero de Pedro, Marqu1/2s de Casa Mena began his diplomatic career in 1957 when he enrolled in the School of Diplomacy. Over his thirty-five-year career he served at various posts, including Manila, Bangkok, Madrid, Santiago (Chile), Oporto (Portugal), Stockholm, Ottawa, and The Hague. He served in New Orleans between 1976-80, attaining the rank of the consul general of Spain in New Orleans. He is now retired, with the rank of Ambassador of Spain.

Translator Richard E. Chandler has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in foreign languages. He has taught at the United States Naval Academy, Louisiana State University, and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, where he was both the Gabrielle H1/2brard Honor Professor of Foreign Languages and head of the foreign language department. The coauthor of both A New History of Spanish Literature and A New Anthology of Spanish Literature, Chandler has been named a Knight of the Order of Isabel the Catholic by the King of Spain. He currently resides in Lafayette, Louisiana.
