Light In August

By Faulkner, William

Light in August is a 1932 novel by the American author William Faulkner. Light in August is an exploration of racial conflict in the society of the Southern United States. Originally Faulkner planned to call the novel Dark House, which also became the working title for Absalom, Absalom! Supposedly, one summer evening while sitting on a porch, his wife remarked on the strange quality that light in the south has during the month of August.

Light in August.

FAULKNER, William.

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas,, 1932. Octavo. Original grey cloth, spine lettered in blue and front board in orange, top edge orange, fore edge uncut. With the dust jacket and glassine wrapper. Housed in a black cloth chemise and black quarter morocco slipcase. A little offsetting to front free endpaper; a fine copy in the notably bright dust jacket, spine ends a little nicked and a little rubbing to extremities, and retaining two remnants of the scarce glassine jacket, surviving in two portions. First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed by the author to his close childhood friend on the front free endpaper, "For Myrtle Ramey, Oxford Miss 30 May 1934, William Faulkner". Myrtle Ramey and Faulkner met in third grade of Oxford Graded Public School. Faulkner skipped second grade at the age of eight and joined Ramey's class in September 1906. Ramey was only permitted to attend school part time due to her ill health, but nevertheless the two struck up a close friendship. Beginning with The Marble Faun in 1924, Ramey was one of a very select few to whom he sent copies of his books; despite Ramey's marriage in 1926, the majority of his inscriptions persisted in using her maiden name. Faulkner clearly valued Ramey's opinion on his writing, also sending her in 1924 a sheaf of twelve typewritten poems (his "Mississippi Poems") and a seven page essay entitled "Verse, Old and Nascent: A Pilgrimage", for her to critique. Light in August is widely considered one of the great novels of the 20th century. "Few American novels are so lavish in dramatic incident, so infused with images of sensation, so precisely fixed in place and weather" (Irving Howe, William Faulkner: A Critical Study, 1957, pp. 200-14). Inscribed copies of this work are notably uncommon, with just four other such copies traced at auction.

LIGHT IN AUGUST

Faulkner William

New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1932. First edition, first issue with “Jefferson” instead of “Mottstown” in the first line on page 340. With an illustrated title-page. 8vo, publisher’s original beige buckram lettered in orange on the upper cover and in blue on the spine, in the very scarce original dustjacket. 480 pp. A very fine copy, the book essentially pristine and in excellent condition, the very scarce dustjacket is extremely attractive with only the most minor of mellowing evident along the edges and a small tear to the top of the fold line of the front flap. IMPORTANT FIRST EDITION AND UNUSUAL IN THIS CONDITION AND VERY SCARCE IN THE DUSTJACKET. The jacket has the correct $2.50 price and listing of Boyle, Kay as the first author on the back cover as is proper for the original first issue. LIGHT IN AUGUST is one of Faulkner's greatest books. The novel's central themes of race, religion and human nature have not, over time, been diminished in their potency. The book presents one of Faulkner’s most balanced works, discussing the negative and positive forces in life as it focuses on the relationship between men and women and between races. One of America's greatest modern writers, Faulkner was awarded a Nobel Prize in 1950 for his literary accomplishments. In his acceptance he made the brief but important statement “that man will not merely endure; he will prevail... because he has a soul, a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice and endurance... [it is] the writer’s duty to write about these things.”

Faulkner, William

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932. Large octavo. Rough woven tan cloth, lettered in blue and orange. A fine copy in equally fine and unusually bright and fresh pictorial dust jacket, with the very slightly chipped and tanned outer glassine wrapper carefully preserved. First edition, first printing, first binding. The first printing consisted of 8500 copies, a relatively small number of which appeared with blue stamping only (a characteristic of the bindings of the later impressions). The error "Jefferson" on p.340 has no bibliographic significance, as it reoccurs in the reprints. PETERSEN A13a. MASSEY 103.

Light In August

FAULKNER, WILLIAM

New York: Smith & Haas, 1932. First Edition, First Printing. From the library of film director Tod Browning, with his signature in pencil to the front pastedown. Very good lightly used copy with a trace of edge wear, a faint 1/3” spot to the cloth at the front board and slight edge wear in a very good bright dust jacket with a few tiny nicks and tears, with two tears skillfully internally mended by an expert paper conservationist. At this time, during the Great Depression, Faulkner was attempting to break into Hollywood screenwriting as his income from his novels and stories provided very little. Tod Browning was Lon Chaney Sr.’s most noted director during the silent era specializing in strange and atmospheric crime films and pictures with elements of horror. With the coming of sound Browning directed Bela Lugosi in the original 1931 Dracula and at MGM he directed his 1932 masterpiece Freaks.

8vo. New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932. 8vo., [iv], 480 pp., with title-vignette. Original tan cloth lettered in orange to upper board, backstrip lettered in blue, with original pictorial dust jacket, top-edge orange. Dust jacket has a few tiny nicks at the edges, remnants of the original glassine wrapper remain intact, a very good copy. § First edition, first printing. A fine copy of Light in August, in the iconic jacket designed by Arthur Hawkins. “Set in the author's present day, the interwar period, the novel centers on two strangers who arrive at different times in Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, a fictional county based on Faulkner's home, Lafayette County, Mississippi. The plot first focuses on Lena Grove, a young pregnant white woman from Alabama looking for the father of her unborn child, and then shifts to explore the life of Joe Christmas, a man who has settled in Jefferson and passes as white, but who secretly believes he has some black ancestry...In a loose, unstructured modernist narrative style that draws from Christian allegory and oral storytelling, Faulkner explores themes of race, sex, class and religion in the American South... over time, the novel has come to be considered one of the most important literary works by Faulkner and one of the best English-language novels of the 20th century.” (Wikipedia)

Faulkner, William

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1932. First edition, first issue, with first printing statement on copyright page, and "Jefferson" for "Mottstown" on page 340, line 1; first-issue binding, lettered in blue and orange. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in an excellent dust jacket with some light rubbing and wear. Petersen A13a; Howard A13.1a; Massey 103. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A nice example. One of William Faulkner’s most admired and accessible novels, Light in August reveals the great American author at the height of his powers. Lena Grove’s resolute search for the father of her unborn child begets a rich, poignant, and ultimately hopeful story of perseverance in the face of mortality. It also acquaints us with several of Faulkner’s most unforgettable characters, including the Reverend Gail Hightower, plagued by visions of Confederate horsemen, and Joe Christmas, a ragged, itinerant soul obsessed with his mixed-race ancestry. Powerfully entwining these characters’ stories, Light in August brings to life Faulkner’s imaginary South, one of literature’s great invented landscapes, in all of its unerringly fascinating glory. "No man ever put more of his heart and soul into the written word than did William Faulkner. If you want to know all you can about that heart and soul, the fiction where he put it is still right there" (Eudora Welty).

Faulkner, William

New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas, 1932. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy of the book in a very Near Fine dust jacket. Dust jacket spine a trifle faded, two very short tears on the front panel. Previous owner's name stamped on the inner paste-down. Written on the verge of the outbreak of World War II, William Faulkner's Light in August examines complex moral issues and race dynamics within a conservative and prejudiced southern landscape. The story follows two strangers, Lena Grove and Joe Christmas, who move to Mississippi. Lena, a pregnant woman looking for the father of her unborn child, struggles for acceptance as Joe grapples with his suspected black heritage. Stylistically modern, Faulkner's drama is non-linear and paints an unforgiving portrait of his protagonists and southern culture. In a contemporary review, The New York Times called Faulkner "a stylist of striking strength and beauty," who had secured his place "in the very front rank of American writers of fiction.".
