Live and Let Die

By Fleming, Ian

"Her hair was black and fell to her shoulders. She had high cheekbones and a sensual mouth, and wore a dress of white silk. Her eyes were blue, alight and disdainful, but, as they gazed into his with a touch of humour, Bond realized that they contained a message.

Solitaire watched his eyes on her and nonchalantly drew her forearms together so that the valley between her breasts deepened. The message was unmistakable."

Beautiful, fortune-telling Solitaire is the prisoner (and tool) of Mr Big—master of fear, artist in crime and Voodoo Baron of Death. James Bond has no time for superstition—he knows that this criminal heavy hitter is also a top SMERSH operative and a real threat. More than that, after tracking him through the jazz joints of Harlem, to the everglades and on to the Caribbean, 007 has realized that Big is one of the most dangerous men that he has ever faced. And no-one, not even the mysterious Solitaire, can be sure how their battle of wills is going to end…

LIVE AND LET DIE

FLEMING IAN

London: Cape, 1954. First Edition. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. First UK Edition. First Impression, First Issue, First State. Gilbert A2a 1.1. A lovely near fine (or better) copy with the gilt spine lettering and coin device to front board bright (often found dull). The D/W is also in near fine (or better) condition its only fault being some age toning to the rear panel in places. The front panel is fresh. This is the issue with 'author's skill' within the final line of the Irish Times review on the rear panel. No priority is established. This copy exhibits none of the usual "tiredness" so often seen with Live and Let Die first editions. Scans invited.

Live and Let Die.

FLEMING, Ian.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1954. Octavo. Original black boards, titles to spine and roundel to front board gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box. Front board very gently bowed. Otherwise a fine copy in a bright jacket with lightly rubbed rear panel, slight toning to top edges of flaps, and mildly rubbed and nicked spine ends and corners. First edition, first impression, in the first issue jacket without the design credit slug to the front flap. The earliest dust jackets issued made no mention of Kenneth Lewis and at some point the need was recognised to credit his work. A stamp was made and as a stopgap existing jackets were overstamped beneath the blurb on the front flap. This slightly amateurish solution was swiftly abandoned and the jacket was reset and reprinted to include the Lewis credit. Copies of the first impression exist with all three states though we note that the third state dust jacket may readily be found on reprints and ought therefore be regarded with some suspicion. Copies of the first issue in such condition as the present example are increasingly hard to find.

Fleming, Ian

Cape, 1954. Hardcover. Near Fine. A first edition, first printing published by Cape in 1954. The book is very good+/near fine with one name to the ffep and a small bookseller's ticket to the corner of the front pastedown. The gilt on the vignette to the front board and the spine titles is slightly faded. In a very good+ unclipped first issue wrapper which has NO mention of the dust wrapper artist, Kenneth Lewis on the front flap. The spine of the wrapper is a deep purple with some minor wear to the head of the spine and to corners. Some gentle soiling to the rear panel. Some very faint staining to the end-flaps. Now housed in a custom-made clamshell box decorated with gilt titles. A rare first edition, first issue and a lovely item indeed.

Fleming, Ian:

London: Jonathan Cape. 1959. Sixth printing of the 1954 first edition. Sixth printing of the 1954 first edition. Signed by Ian Fleming. Original cloth in dustwrapper. A superb near fine, clean, bright and tight copy, the lightest of bumping to the spine tips, the contents complete and without foxing. With the "Four Oaks Farm" bookplate of film producer Stan Meyer to the front free endpaper. Complete with the very good rubbed and nicked original dustwrapper which has a small chip to the bottom of the spine where it meets the back panel, which is a little dusty. Not price-clipped; 10s 6d net. Unusually for this printing, the dustwrapper is identical to that of the first edition, third state (rear flap blank, back panel with advert for Casino Royale, the front flap with the artist credit directly underneath the publisher's blurb). Signed by the author in blue ink on the front free endpaper. Provenance: From the library of Stanley and Dodo Meyer. Stanley Meyer, a producer at Warner Brothers, had in 1956 expressed an interest in buying an option on Live and Let Die and Moonraker. At the time of presentation he was producer and co-owner of the legendary Dragnet, the most successful police series on US television. Live and Let Die.

Fleming, Ian

London: Jonathan Cape, 1954. First edition of the second James Bond novel. Octavo, original black cloth. Near fine in a first issue dust jacket without credit for the jacket design and art with some rubbing and wear to the spine and extremities. The first edition consisted of 7,500 copies. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "Fleming accomplished an extraordinary amount in the history of the thriller. Almost single-handedly, he revived popular interest in the spy novel, spawning legions of imitations, parodies, and critical and fictional reactions Through the immense success of the filmed versions of his books, his character James Bond became the best known fictional personality of his time and Fleming the most famous writer of thrillers since Sir Arthur Conan Doyle" (Reilly, 571). The inspiration for these changes came from Fleming's experiences of travel in the U.S. and his knowledge of Jamaica itself, where Live and Let Die was written at Fleming's 'Goldeneye' estate. The novel's innovations were positively noted by The Sunday Times when they wrote "[h]ow wincingly well Mr. Fleming writes." And the Times thought Live and Let Die "is an ingenious affair, full of recondite knowledge and horrific spills and thrills - of slightly sadistic excitements also - though without the simple and bold design of its predecessor."

London:: Cape,, 1954.. First edition (ie: first impression).. Hardcover. G+. 240pp. Previous owner has removed library evidences: front endpaper removed, stained half-title pasted onto pastedown. Rear endpaper creased and heavily spotted. Light foxing to prelims, minor soiling or handling to a few pages. In the original black cloth-textured binding: slightly dulled, spine sightly ridged, spine ends blunted, small knock to head of lower joint. 1cm splits to the head of the upper joint and the foot of the lower joint are probably due to the spine having been tugged, as the joints are not otherwise worn. Firm and square, corners good, no actual library marks. Not bad: not cheap, not common.
