About This Item

New York: Mitchell Kennerley, 1913. Hardcover. Small 8vo. Green cloth with black lettering and decoration. xx, 610pp, (8pp), (2pp ads). Frontispiece, illustrations. Very good. Faint binding edgewear, else internally fine. A tight and handsome third printing, the so-called "Press Edition," of this most controversial and still debated account of Cook's claim to have reached the geographic North Pole in 1908. Delightful and bold front pastedown inscription in black ink: "Dr F.A. Cook / has asked me to / present you, Mrs & Mrs. [sic] / Fred'k. C Matthews with / this record of his / accomplishments at the / top of the world / Kindest of everything / T.P. Thompson / 8/1/37 / Chicago." The identity of Thompson -- clearly a Cook supporter presumably personally connected to the explorer, who lived until 1940 -- and the recipient are unclear. An intriguing copy.
