Napoleon in Exile; or, a Voice From St. Helena. The Opinions and Reflections of Napoleon on the Most Important Events of His Life and Government, in His Own Words

Barry E. O'Meara

ont> W. Simpkin and R. Marshall : London, 1822 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition.. The very scarce first edition of the surgeon Barry O'Meara's work recounting his time as Napoleon's surgeon on Saint Helena, illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. The first edition of this work. Complete in two volumes. With half-title to volume II. Written by Barry O'Meara. O'Meara was a surgeon, who accompanied Napoleon to Saint Helena and acted as his physician. This work documents O'Meara's time as Napoleon's physician. Napoleon was exiled to Saint Helena in 1815, during which time he wrote a book about Julius Caesar. O'Meara believed that Napoleon's declining health during this time was due to his harsh treatment, and he ended up dying in Saint Helena in 1821. With a frontispiece to each volume. Prior owner's faint ink inscription to the recto of the frontispiece, 'Samuel G. Melville of Lausanne Canton of Vaud Switzerland, late pupil of Napoleon Military College'. With two leaves of papers loosely inserted, concerning a prior owner trying to find more information about another prior owner, Samuel G. Melville. No collation available, though later editions were printed with plates. Condition: Rebacked with the original half calf binding and marbled paper boards laid on. Externally, smart. A little rubbing to the spines. A little discolouration to the leather to the boards. Minor rubbing to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with heavy spotting to the first and last few pages, with occasional spots to pages and to the fore edge. The occasional pencil annotation to the margins, relating to the works. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.

Barry O'Meara was one of Napoleon's doctors on St. Helena, appointed by the British government. He provides a fascinating first hand account of Napoleon's recollections and attitudes during his captivity. "I spoke little, and listened as attentively as I could, seldom interposing. To my memory I did not entirely trust; immediately on retiring to my chamber and carefully committed to paper the topics of conversation, with so far as I could, the exact words used." . Fifth edition. Illustrated with four engraved plates. Barry Edward O'Meara (17861836) was an Irish surgeon and founding member of the Reform Club, who accompanied Napoleon to St. Helena and became his physician, having been surgeon on board the Bellerophon when the emperor surrendered himself.
