About This Item
New York: Doubleday, Doran & Co. , 1938. Cloth. Near Fine/Good. 8.5" by 6". Not Stated . An excellent copy of this early edition of 'Pepita', Vita Sackville West's extraordinary biography of her grandmother Josefa and her mother Victoria. The second US edition, in the unclipped dust wrapper. This biography by the famous literary figure Vita Sackville-West is an extraordinary narrative of the lives of Josefa, her daughter Victoria, and her granddaughter Vita, the author. Vita tells of Josefa's (or Pepita's) story: of how she made a fortune through dancing in Madrid; of her affair with a young English attaché who will become Lord Sackville; of the career of her daughter Victoria in school; bringing together a family history. This remarkable biography tells the story of the author's unlikely inheritance, that makes for an absorbing read; It is a touching and affectionate memoir. With the unclipped dust wrapper. Illustrated with a frontispiece. In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally lovely with only minor shelf wear and a minor bumping to the head and tail of the spine and to the extremities. The dust wrapper is sound with some shelf wear and edge wear, and a closed tear to the front and rear joint, tape repaired internally to the head of the spine. The spine of the wrapper is slightly sunned. Unclipped. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are clean with only a touch of age toning, as usual. Illustrated with a frontispiece. Near Fine
