[THE SAN FRANCISCO CALL]. CHARLES M. SHORTRIDGE (EDITOR). HISTORICAL WESTERN. RIO PUERCO BANDIT RAID. Newspaper. Volume 80, No. 125. October 3, 1896. First Edition. Condition: Very Good +. Appears gently read, some faint staining to front, foxing, creases, chips to extremities, complete, folds at quarter-fold typical of newspapers otherwise excellent. The San Francisco Call newspaper (named the Morning Call from 1856-1895) one time featured articles from Mark Twain and later stories from numerous writers with ties to early turn of the century San Francisco theatre. Scarce original article of the High Fives Gang attempted robbery of the Atlantic and Pacific Train on October 2, 1896 in the Rio Puerco area in New Mexico. Pursued by U.S. Deputy Marshal Will Loomis, Sheriff Bob Leatherwood and U.S. Deputy Marshal Fred Higgins. The outlaw members were; Black Jack Christian, Bob Hayes, George West Musgrave, Van Musgrave, Code Young, Sid Moore, and "Three Fingered" Jack Dunlop. The Skeleton Canyon shootout was on August 12, 1896, less than two months before the train robbery, was made famous by the High Fives Gang. Skeleton Canyon is located in the Peloncillo Mountains in Arizona near the New Mexico border was later made famous in many western novels, cinema and western pulp magazines. Broadsheet Size.
