Profiles In Courage

By Kennedy, John F

Profiles in Courage was written by John F. Kennedy when the iconic U.S. President was still a senator. The Pulitzer Prize-winning volume of short biographies tells of eight United States Senators who shown great courage under enormous pressure from their parties and their constituents. Among Kennedy’s featured senators were: John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, Thomas Hart Benton, Sam Houston, Edmund G. Ross, Lucius Lamar, George Norris, and Robert A. Taft. While these Senators suffered severe criticism and losses in popularity because of their actions, their stories are used to illustrate the principles and virtues that Kennedy believed were required of Americans in a century of progress.

Profiles in Courage hit the bestsellers list three times: when JFK was an up-and-coming Senator in the late 1950s; after he was elected President in 1960-61; and following his assassination in 1963-64. The book led to the creation of the “Profiles in Courage” award,  an annual award made to recognize displays of moral and political courage similar to those that Kennedy profiled.

Profiles In Courage.

Kennedy, John F

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1956. First edition of Kennedy's Pulitzer Prize-winning work. Octavo, original half cloth, with eight pages of black-and-white photogravures. Association copy, inscribed by the author to Massachusetts Senator Leverett Saltonstall, "To Senator Saltonstall- with the very highest regards of his colleague John Kennedy." Leverett Saltonstall was the senior senator of Massachusetts while, John Kennedy was the junior senator. An excellent copy in a bright near fine dust jacket. Saltonstall served as Republican Whip from 1949-1957 and as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee from 1953-1955. Saltonstall attended the wedding of John Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier in 1953, and the two served together in the Senate from 1953 to 1960. Saltanstall and Kennedy worked together closely over the course of several years, as evidenced of one of their constituents thought the two had an even closer relationship, mistakenly assuming Saltonstall to be Kennedy's uncle. "If you are ready to admit it," Kennedy kidded in a 1963 letter, "I am." Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An excellent association linking these two statesmen. The Pulitzer Prize-winning book was written when Kennedy was the junior senator from Massachusetts, and it served as a clarion call to every American. The inspiring accounts of eight previous heroic acts by American patriots inspired the American public to remember the courage progress requires. Now, a half-century later, it remains a classic and a relevant testament to the national spirit that celebrates the most noble of human virtues. Kennedy relates these heroisms to sketches of American politicians who have risked their careers for principle. "A man does what he must," he wrote, "in spite of personal consequences, in spite of obstacles and dangers and pressures-and that is the basis of all human morality."

Profiles in Courage

Kennedy, John F.

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1955. First Edition. Light Blue with black spine and gold text on spine. Very good +/near fine. INSCRIBED "For Mathilda Westbrook Sinclair - / With the very best wishes / John F. Kennedy", Quality copy of one of the most important Presidential books of the 20th Century, certainly the only one to have won a Pulitzer Prize. 16mo 6" x 8.5" pp. [vi] xix 1- 266. Book has light fraying along edges including front right corner and slight split at top of spine and puncture hole mid-spine. Binding is very strong...despite being opened often to admire this historic signature. Dust Jacket, perhaps married, has only two small chips on front lower left, slight browning at upper half of spine and light wear at top and bottom of DJ spine. Becoming available less frequently, cornerstone of every authentic Presidential collection. "All us in the Senate meet endless examples of such conflicting pressures, which only reflect the inconsistencies inevitable in our complex economy. If we tell our constituents frankly that we can do nothing, they feel we are unsympathetic or inadequate. If we try and fail - usually meeting a counteraction from other Senators representing other interests - they say we are like all the rest of the politicians. All we can do is retreat into the Cloakroom and weep on the shoulder of a sympathetic colleague - or go home and snarl at our wives." (p 19).

Profiles in Courage (Decisive Moments in the Lives of Celebrated Americans)

Kennedy, John F.

New York: Harper & Brothers. Nearly fine copy in nearly fine dust jacket. 1956. 1st. hardcover. 8vo, 266 pp., Foreword by Allan Nevins., Stated first edition on copyright page with code M-E. Dust jacket prices at $3.50. The top edge of the dust jacket spine is stuck to the cloth, causing there to be two short closed tears to the jacket at that junction, one vertical along the fold and one horizontal across the spine; they do not detract much from the overall appearance of an otherwise very nice copy. .
